Assess workshop @ LAK24 Kyoto

Japan

On Tuesday, 19 March 2024, Professor Divjak participated in the organization of another pre-conference workshop of the Learning Analytics and Knowledge Conference (LAK24) in Kyoto, Japan. The whole-day workshop was held by a team of international academics and LA experts, including also Professor Dragan Gašević (Monash University), Assistant Professor Yoon Jeon Kim (University of Wisconsin) and Dr Abhinava Barthakur (University of South Australia).

The fourth edition of the LAK Assess Workshop on Learning Analytics and Assessment was dedicated to the highly debated topic of assessment in the age of generative AI. A number of good practice examples from all over the world have been presented, including universities from Australia and China to Europe and the USA, and teams working on Duolingo and Khan Academy.

The workshop highlighted that, after the emergence of generative AI at first looking disruptive for education, new assessment models have started developing, as well as new ways of detecting plagiarism. It led to the overall conclusion that, instead of simply fighting AI in education (and especially assessment) due to its possible adverse effects, new developments should (and already do) focus on using generative AI meaningfully, to enhance education and prepare students for life in the AI-era.

The outcomes of this workshop will feed into the work done within the Trustworthy Learning Analytics and Artificial Intelligence for Sound Learning Design (TRUELA) project, dealing with valid, reliable and trustworthy e-assessment.
