On Friday, 22 March 2024, Professor Blaženka Divjak participated as one of the panelists in the discussion on Building Collaborative Pathways for Research and Industry in LA within the LAK24 conference in Kyoto. The panel also included Professor Dragan Gašević (Monash University), Dr Alina von Davier (Duolingo), Associate Professor Srećko Joksimović (University of South Australia), and Dr Kristen DiCerbo (Khan Academy).

The speakers discussed the differing perspectives and interests of the academy and industry, as well as possibilities for collaboration and financing programs. When talking about cooperation in LA and AI, the differences is systems across different parts of the world were considered, including relevant regulation. Finally, the speakers touched upon the topic of “brain drain”, with highly qualified individuals and scientists leaving academia for industry, or moving to countries with higher paying jobs in science, without “brain circulation” in terms of return or exchange.
