LA Lab @ LAK25

session

From 3 to 7 March 2025 the 15th International Conference on Learning Analytics and Knowledge (LAK25) was held in Dublin, organized by the Society for Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR), the leading international and interdisciplinary research network in the field of learning analytics. This is the most prominent and competitive conference in the world related to learning analytics.

Learning analytics is a relatively new but rapidly growing field of research and practice that is becoming increasingly important in the age of artificial intelligence. FOI stands out in both the Croatian and global research context with its work and results in this area: Professor Blaženka Divjak is internationally recognized as one of the key experts and currently serves as Vice President of SoLAR. Additionally, the FOI Learning Analytics Laboratory (LA Lab) is continuously engaged in relevant research and projects, including TRUELA and Erasmus+ iLed.

Reflecting this, FOI's LA Lab achieved outstanding results at the LAK25 conference. As part of the pre-conference program, Professor Blaženka Divjak and members of the LA Lab – Darko Grabar, Barbi Svetec and Petra Vondra – in collaboration with colleagues from The Open University (UK) and Monash University (Australia), conducted an interactive workshop. The workshop - held for the third consecutive year - focused on learning design using FOI’s innovative tool Balanced Design Planning (learning-design.eu), which is free to use and already used in over 40 countries worldwide. Additionally, Professor Blaženka Divjak co-organized a workshop on learning analytics and assessment together with colleagues from Monash University (Australia), the University of South Australia, the University of Wisconsin (USA), and the University of Hong Kong.

Two scientific papers (supported by the TRUELA and iLed projects) were presented during the main conference. The paper titled "The Impact of Learning Design on the Mastery of Learning Outcomes in Higher Education" was prepared by Prof Blaženka Divjak and Barbi Svetec in collaboration with researchers from the University of South Australia – Dr Abhinava Barthakur and Prof Vitomir Kovanović. The second paper, titled "Decoding Learning Design Decisions: A Cluster Analysis of 12,749 Teaching and Learning Activities", was prepared by Dr Josmario Albuquerque, Prof Bart Rienties (OU) and Prof Blaženka Divjak.

Finally, the LA Lab team also presented a research poster "Educator-AI Partnership: Paving the Way to Sound Learning Design" by Prof Blaženka Divjak, Josipa Bađari, Darko Grabar, Barbi Svetec, and Petra Vondra (related to the TRUELA project).
